There are 4 major social media networks you can choose to use when taking on promoting your blog on social media. There’s Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram.
For the sake of this, we’re going to pretend like Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube aren’t part of the mix. For most of us these platforms would be second options. And, well, YouTube and TikTok are video first platforms anyways. So it’s a whole different ballgame over there.
These days the two most common choices are Facebook and Instagram with a bulk of bloggers choosing Facebook as their #1 platform.
Here’s why you should start out on Instagram instead.
That’s a lot of air time, my friend. Since Facebook has a similar percent of daily users at 66%, you can rest easy knowing that no matter the choice, Facebook or Instagram, you are choosing a platform with high usage from its members.
And in 2020 they’ll spend an average of 28 minutes on the platform every day. 28 whole minutes that you can spend connecting and creating really valuable content for your avatar.
One of the fastest ways for you to connect with your avatar is to find them on a social media platform. You already know who they are down to their core, right?
So, figuring out what hashtags, topics and locations they are interacting with is relatively simple for you. When you rely on Search Engine Optimization and Pinterest to do the work for you, by showing up in search, you are wasting precious time.
Time you could spend connecting with real humans that you can serve today.
And with the highest engagement rate of any platform, Instagram is the easiest way to start making these connections. Because people are already relatively comfortable engaging on the platform, you don’t have to spend as much time trying to get them to engage.
Which means you can do less with more. That’s a total win.
The thing I love about Instagram is that it’s really simple to use. Once you have the hang of the main features, there isn’t a lot to use about how to actually use the platform itself. Which makes it perfect for newbies those avoiding technology.
Facebook, on the other hand, has, what seems like, a billion features. I think there are like 12 different types of posts you can create for your Facebook feed at this point. Have you ever found yourself wondering what the heck you are supposed to do with a watch party?
There’s just a lot to consider in terms of content creation. And a lot of it seems unnecessary when the only goal you really have on social media is to find your people.
So, in terms of learning a social media platform, Instagram definitely gets the blue ribbon in my book.
Here’s the deal. We rely more and more every single day on our phones to get us the information we need and cross things off our 10 miles-long to-do lists.
That means that we are spending more time on our phones every single day.
Now, Instagram is a mobile-first platform. It was built to function best on our phones before the desktop version was created. The desktop version still doesn’t have all the features available.
This totally works in our favor, though.
When people rely more and more on their phones for, well, everything, we have a higher chance of reaching them while they are there.
And when you consider that most people have notifications turned on for just about every social media platform you discover how simple it can be to really reach and connect with the people that matter.
Facebook is a company that owns a variety of apps, including Instagram. That means, with little to no effort you can share your posts from Instagram to Facebook automatically. It’s as simple as clicking an option on Instagram (or in a scheduler of some kind if you are using one) and posting. This is called cross-posting.
Why from Instagram to Facebook?
You would think that it would be as simple to cross-post from Facebook to Instagram. But it isn’t. There are a ton of settings to change and not every post on Facebook will actually work on Instagram.
But every post you make on Instagram will share to Facebook beautifully. So, just by choosing Instagram you can skip some frustration with Facebook and just crosspost!
The internet is full of humans just looking to find other people that they have something in common with.
We are all seeking to be understood.
And in the age of social media and the internet, we often turn to these platforms to help us do that.
That’s where you come in.
There is someone out there that is looking for your blog all about parenting kiddos and arts and crafts you can do with them to foster their creativity.
There is someone out there looking for advice on how to get their finances together with the pressure of student loans looming over their heads.
And on a platform where people are more willing to engage, you are more likely to find the people who say, “I don’t know what I would do without you!”
That means that ⅓ of American adults are using Instagram. Over 100 million. The interesting stat here is the teen numbers.
Teens report using Snapchat the most but Instagram is the most popular traditional social media platform for them. TikTok and Snapchat are really popular among teens and I’m really curious to see if the teens continue to primarily use those platforms as they become young adults or if they start to use Instagram more.
High production values are not necessary to be successful on Instagram. Your message and the way you serve people is way more important than having photos from a professional photographer. If you’ve got a decent phone camera and some sunlight, you are good to go.
The difference between a personal profile and a business profile is the ability to put a link at the bottom of the profile. So, building your blog as a personal brand is really easy. People are looking to connect with people, after all, and people aren’t looking to do business with faceless brands anymore. They want to buy from people that they can actually get to know.
All this in a tool AND it’s free. Need I say more?
