Ni-ch. Nee-ch. Nee-sh.
Sheesh.
Sound about right to you?
Niche is definitely a word that definitely gets thrown around the blogging community.
Like, a lot.
Even if you’ve only done one Pinterest search about blogging, you probably saw the word niche in one of the top ten pins.
Or maybe you’ve heard the phrase, “The riches are in the niches” thrown around like produce at a farmer’s market.
But what really is a niche?
And how can you figure yours out without going insane?
If you’re feeling a little bit like a deer in the headlights when it comes to the whole “niching down” thing, let me help ya out. Let’s talk about the different approaches to the process and a few things to avoid as you get started!
It’s a focus. More specifically, it’s your focus.
It’s the what and the who. And as much as I’d like to tell you that you don’t need one to be successful, I can’t. I’ll give you an example.
Say, you want to play darts. You’ve have two options: confetti and darts. You would choose the darts, right? Because it’s made specifically for that situation. Confetti would be pretty (and a lot of fun!), but it wouldn’t win you a game of darts, now, would it?
Well, niching down is a lot like that. Doing something general and all over the place would be fun, but ultimately, people are going to notice that your content feels a little like confetti.
But, if you focus down and try something strategic that offers solutions or speaks to the soul of someone? That’s a darts kinda situation, my friend!
Niching down might seem scary in the beginning. Especially if you don’t have a specific topic or goal in mind already. But there are a few different ways you can niche down and it’s not always by topic.
So, if you’re feeling a little overwhelmed by the whole narrowing down process or you just need a little guidance, I’ve got a FREE “How to find your Blog Niche in an Hour” workbook specifically for you to walk you through the whole process of niching down.
Just fill in the form below and I’ll send it to your inbox instantly so you can get this whole “niching” thing out of the way in the next hour!
This is the first thing people think of when they hear “niche down.” And it’s probably because we interchange the words “narrow” and “niche.”
It usually looks something like this
You see how the topic gets more and more specific? When you start out with a brand topic like, DIY, you encompass a huge amount of information.
And you can’t cover everything in the DIY space. And you probably don’t want to!
So, we start narrowing down into something that feels manageable as an overall content umbrella. For you, that might be “Paper crafts for beginners,” but if you have a style that you lean toward a majority of the time something like, “whimsical paper crafts for beginners” might be what you’re looking for!
When you have a blog that laser focused on a topic, the people that land on your website are more likely to become returning visitors. Why? Because they know exactly what kind of content they are getting when they come to your website!

The next way you can choose to niche down is by experience or person.
Or if you want to get into marketing terms: psychographics.
This method works really well for folks that maybe have a person in mind when they think about blogging.
You might want to speak to your younger self, for example. And if you’re asking yourself, “Is it weird that I want to write to myself, but, 10 years ago?”
The answer is no! This is so normal.
And in this case you’ll want to niche down by getting more detailed about who that person is or the experience they’ve had.
Be wary of this one. There a lot of definitions floating around for the term “lifestyle blog.”
Many of those definitions are wrong. Straight up bull.
In the blogging world, “lifestyle blog” has become synonymous with “whatever topics I feel like.”
Try on the other niche types before you go straight for the lifestyle blog, ok?
But, in the case that the other two just don’t seem to be cozy to you, try looking at it like this:
Lifestyle can be a bit more general as long as you have some sort of focus and aren’t just throwing topics around because they sound appealing.
This could be as simple as choosing to be a mom blogger and sharing about motherhood and being a mom through your eyes.
Maybe you like gardening, baking and being the fun mom. And those are the things you want to share about. That’s motherhood through your lens!
Your best friend might talk about fashion for moms, coding and science programs for kids and finding time to travel without kids.
And, because it is all from a unique person, it is a unique lifestyle and lifestyle blog!
Make sense?
Here’s the bottom line: Lifestyle blogs are still relevant and they often look like a blend of the two other types of niche. This might be you!
